Gabriela Hearst dipped even further into her Latin American heritage for Pre-Spring 2022, elevating the virtuosity and uniqueness of typical indigenous handcrafts with a collection inspired by the avant-garde Jipitecas counterculture movement, which originated in Mexico in the Sixties, promoting women's rights issues. “There is a need in the vision to go deeper, more personal, more human.To support the craft, the collective, the spirit that bonds us. The re-emergence of the community that understands that the power is in the collective and not in the individual. That anything done for the collective is not only more rewarding but also enjoyable than just satisfying the self. Recognizing the interconnectivity that not only empowers us but will be our saving grace,” says Hearst. The winner of multiple fashion awards, who had set a goal to use 50% non-virgin materials by 2020, is impressively on target considering that this collection is made out of 49% deadstock and upcycled materials.
Her exquisitely adorned timeless staples of uncompromising quality– long skirts, fluid Boho dresses, fringed ponchos - in the finest, softest materials, are enriched with custom-made lace, the exclusive Xicalcoliuhqui motif, crochet appliques and whispered embroideries.
Also in the limelight are a crop of eye-catching “landscape sweaters,” inspired by Machu Picchu, Teotihuacan, Yellowstone and Aspen. In her exploration of North, Central and South America, the designer captured these incredible landmarks on her sweaters, knitted and hand-embroidered by artisans in Italy.
