Jul 19, 2021
Bonding its belief on how sports can spur change and further elevating its commitment to sustainability, Nike;has inaugurated the Shek Lei Grind Court, a refurbished community basketball court in Hong Kong. Fully;embracing the mantra that sport milieus are transformative grounds for fun and self-discovery, this new;project is located in the city’s Kwai Chung residential neighborhood. The court’s surface is made of Nike;Grind, composed of up to 20,000 pairs of used sneakers, and enlivened by the whimsy of British artist;James Jarvis, who created illustrations of spherical cartoon characters playing basketball, splashed across;the court.
The spot was chosen for its proximity to 14 primary and secondary schools, in addition to the region’s need;for open recreational space for kids to play in. Nike has also partnered with InspiringHK, a local nonprofit;association that aims to promote social mobility and inclusivity through active participation in sport.
With the Shek Lei Grind court, Nike ups its count of Nike courts around the world, currently located in Paris,;Beijing and Mexico City. The courts form a network of communal areas where kids can engage with sport —;and one another.
